There are few coins from US history that are as valuable as those struck before 1933. It is not the gold value, per say, that makes these coins so valuable. Instead, it is the rarity of these coins following a massive collection and melting campaign operated by the federal government during the Great Depression. Now, you can purchase a rare Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Dollar from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coins .048357 ounces of .900 fine gold.
  • Issued with a face value of $1 (USD) by the federal government.
  • The smallest coin, physically, struck by the United States Mint.
  • Categorized as a Type 3 $1 gold coin.
  • Available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

The reason behind the extreme rarity of the $1 gold coins from the US Mint is the Great Depression. In an effort to combat the financial collapse, the federal government collected all gold coins in circulation and melted them down into gold bars. Those few coins that survived are fixed in population and massively popular.

Type 3 $1 Indian Gold Dollars were struck from 1856 to 1889, and represented the largest population of the gold dollar coins struck over 40 years. Type 1 coins were introduced in 1849 with an image of Lady Liberty on the reverse. Type 2 coins featured a Native American bust and were different in diameter.

These coins feature the image of a Native American in a full, feathered headdress on the reverse. The image is surrounded by the engraving “United States of America.” The obverse features the coin’s face value and year of minting, encircled by a wreath of leaves.

Each coin in this product listing is in brilliant uncirculated condition. Coins in BU condition show no trace of wear, but can contain production errors such as contact marks, spotted surfaces, or breaks in luster.

The United States Mint struck these Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Dollar coins at a variety of facilities. The San Francisco Mint, Philadelphia Mint, Charlotte Mint, New Orleans Mint, and Dahlonega Mint all contributed to production.
