Faced with the crippling financial crisis of the Great Depression, the United States government made the drastic decision in 1933 to collect all gold coins and melt them down into gold bars. As a result of this move, remaining gold coins struck prior to 1933 have an immense value as rare precious metal products. Today, Silver.com has Pre-33 $1 Gold Liberty Coins available for purchase.

Coin Highlights:

  • Each coin ships in a plastic flip case.
  • Consists of .048375 ounces of .900 gold.
  • Categorized as Type 1 Gold Liberty Coins.
  • Available in brilliant uncirculated condition.
  • Issued a face value of $1 (USD).

Following the discovery of gold in California in 1849, the Treasury Department was flush with gold. In an effort to provide Americans with a $1 coin that was less bulky than current silver coins, the US Mint used the immense gold stores to strike its smallest gold coin ever.

The Pre-33 $1 Gold Liberty Coins available in this product listing are considered Type 1 coins. This means that each coin was struck by the Mint between 1849 and 1854. During this five-year period of production, Lady Liberty was featured on the reverse side of the coins. Throughout the entire production era of $1 gold coins (1849-1889), the obverse image remained the same.

On the reverse side of these Pre-33 $1 Gold Liberty Coins is the left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty. Her image is surrounded by 13 stars, representative of America’s original 13 colonies. The obverse features the coin’s face value and year of minting in the center, with a wreath surrounding the image. Above that is the engraving “United States of America.”

Each coin is this listing is guaranteed to be in brilliant uncirculated condition. Coins with a BU grade have no trace of wear, but may exhibit contact marks, spotted surfaces, or breaks the in the luster as a result of the coining process.

The United States Mint produced the bulk of these coins at the Philadelphia Mint. While the BU condition of your purchase is guaranteed, the mint year on the coin you receive will depend upon availability when your order is fulfilled.
