The series of Silver Hobo Nickel Rounds from Mr. The was inspired by those who had little to their name. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, American hobos used to pass the time by carving fresh designs or added extras to circulation currency.
Arguably the most popular medium was James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel. Featuring a Native American chieftain on one side and the bison inspired by Black Diamond on the other. Each hobo artist had their own flair, but the vast majority of designs involved additions to Fraser’s existing images.
On the obverse of each 1 oz Proof Silver Green Fairy and Fishbones Hobo Nickel Round you’ll find the image of a scantily clad Green Fairy. She is depicted kneeling down, with no clothes but a ribbon across her lap. In her hand she is holding a glass of some intoxicating substance, complete with steam rising from the cup.
The reverse of each Green Fairy and Fishbones Round is the design of a deep-sea fish, wasted away to nothing but its bone structure. Engravings include those often found on American currency of “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “Five Cents.” These rounds may be based upon Silver Nickels, but are just rounds with no face value.
