Medusa suffered a massive fall from grace during Greek antiquity. She was one of the three gorgon sisters who served as a priestess of Athena, and as such she took a vow of celibacy. However, Medusa forgot her vows and lay with the God of the Sea, Poseidon. When Athena learned of this, she reacted angrily.
She doomed Medusa to a life of solitude, turning away any man that would cross her path. With a body half woman and half snake, and a head full of live snakes, one glance from Medusa would turn any man who looked at her into a stone pillar.
The half-man, half-god Perseus, son of Zeus, was the only man to survive an encounter with Medusa. He was able to decapitate the beast, and gave her head to Athena for use on her personal shield.
