One of the strangest weapons of the ancient, mythological world was the hammer of Thor. Known as Mjolnir, Thor could hurl his hammer at any target and it would immediately return to his hand after striking its target. No other man, mortal human or god, could raise and wield the hammer of Thor.
In Norse mythology, Thor was the son of Odin and the beautiful giantess Fjorgyn. Considered the God of Thunder, Thor was a large and powerful man who was often depicted with a red beard and fierce eyes. His role was to protect both gods and mankind from the forces of evil.
On the obverse of the 1 oz Antique Silver Norse God Series Thor Round you’ll find the fierce image of Thor as he rides his chariot and holds out his hammer as an imposing sign of his power. His chariot is pulled by a team of goats named Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjostr, which translate to Tooth-gap and Tooth-gnasher respectively.
The reverse of the round features the image of a Valkyrie riding her steed through the skies. The Valkyrie were Odin’s chosen band of warrior maidens, and the noise from the hooves of their steeds rumbled through the skies like thunder as the glint of their steel swords served as lightning.
All 1 oz Antique Silver Norse God Series Thor Rounds have a mirrored, antique finish that adds warmth and subtle detail to the finish. Anonymous Mint developed these rounds in coordination with Julie Lindquist, with Luigi Badia creating 3D sculpts based upon artwork from Howard David Johnson. Osborne Precious Metals, the oldest private mint in America, struck these rounds.
