On the obverse face of the 10 oz Silver Scottsdale Tombstone Nugget Bar you’ll find the engraving of the words “Tombstone,” “Arizona Territory,” and “Silver Nugget.” At the time of Tombstone’s founding, Arizona was still a territory of the United States, not earning admission to the Union until 1912.
The reverse face of each of these bars bears a set of engravings identifying the weight, purity, and metal content of the bar itself. In the design field you’ll also find the engraving of the official seal of the Scottsdale Mint, that of a male lion with a crown. Both sides of the 10 oz Silver Scottsdale Tombstone Nugget Bar have dimpled finishes, giving the bars a rustic look.
Tombstone, Arizona was founded by a man named Ed Schieffelin during an expedition to scout Apache Indian forces in 1877. Schieffelin reportedly used his free time seeking out precious metals and other rocks in the surrounding hills. He named the town he founded Tombstone because US Army soldiers warned him that the only stone he’d find out in the wilderness of Arizona would be his tombstone.”
These exciting bars from Scottsdale Mint ship in canvas pouches for individual bars, or wooden crates for multiples of 50. This reflects the original shipping materials that would have been used to move silver from the mines of Tombstone to national markets across the US.
Scottsdale Mint is located in Arizona and is a privately-operated mint. Beyond its silver and gold products, its primary source of pride is the sustainable production methods that see it recycle silver from other industries for use in its silver bars and rounds.
