The Silver American Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It is highly regarded around the globe by collectors and investors as one of the finest coins. These 1986-S 1 oz Silver American Eagle Coins come from the first year the coins were struck by the United States Mint. Silver.com has these coins available today with a PR70 grade from the Professional Coin Grading Service, with a DCAM designation.

In 1985 congress authorized the US Mint to strike the Silver American Eagle coins. Silver stores from the Defense National Stockpile were allocated to the US Mint to produce the coins, with profits going to the federal government’s budget. Congress extended the program in 2002 when the Defense National Stockpile was depleted, allowing the Treasury Department to purchase additional silver stores.

The 1986-S 1 oz Silver American Eagle Coins available today have a PR70 grade from the PCGS. This means each coin is considered a perfectly struck proof coin. A DCAM (Deep Cameo) designation indicates these coins have a strong, frosted design set against a deeply mirrored, clear finish in the background field. The “S” mark identifies these coins as a product of the San Francisco Mint.

On the obverse side of the 1986-S 1 oz Silver American Eagle Coin is Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty. First used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, Lady Liberty can be seen walking toward the setting sun. Engravings on this side of the coin include “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the year of minting.

The reverse side has John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle. Designed by the US Mint’s chief engraver, the eagle is set behind a shield, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The 13 stars above its head represent the original American colonies. Engravings include “United States of America,” and “1 Oz Fine Silver ~ One Dollar.”

Congress authorized the founding of the US Mint with passage of the Coinage Act of 1792. Operating four facilities, today the mint is responsible for producing circulation currency for the federal government and bullion coins including the American Silver Eagle.
