Each Gold American Eagle coin available from Silver.com in this product listing is in PR70 condition. Graded on the Sheldon numeric scale, a 70 is the highest grade any coin can earn, and indicates a product with its full, original luster and no detracting marks of any kind.
The Deep-cameo designation issued to this coin reflects the quality of its finish and visual brilliance. The design field’s strong, frosted finish gives it the appearance of floating above a background which is deeply-mirrored, and clear.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 depiction of Lady Liberty striding forth from Washington DC is considered the finest coin design ever to grace an American gold coin. It was chosen and refined for use on the Gold American Eagle in 1986, after originally appearing on the nation’s $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse design from sculptor and artist Miley Busiek was created in 1986, and is used exclusively on the Gold American Eagle coin from the US Mint. Busiek’s depiction features a family of bald eagles, with the male returning to the nest where a female stands vigilant watch of the hatchlings.
Proof Gold American Eagles were introduced by the US Mint alongside a bullion counterpart in 1986. As of 2006, the US Mint has expanded the program to include a burnished coin meant to attract the attention of serious coin exhibitors.
