The Gold American Eagle is one of the greatest gold bullion products in the world. Along with the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf, this coin was introduced at a time when the South African Gold Krugerrand was scarce on the global stage as economic sanctions diminished availability around the world. Today, you can purchase a 1990-P 1/4 oz Gold American Eagle coin from Silver.com with a PR70 grade from the Professional Coin Grading Service.
As the official gold bullion coin of the United States, all Gold American Eagles are produced using only gold that is sourced from within the US. Unlike its counterpart, the Silver American Eagle, the Gold Eagle Coin is struck in four different denominations: $50 (1 oz), $25 (1/2 oz), $10 (1/4 oz), and $5 (1/10 oz). This particular coin comes from the fifth year of the coin’s production.
These 1990-P 1/4 oz Gold American Eagles have been given a PR70 grade from the PCGS, indicating they are perfectly struck proof coins. A coin with deep cameo, or DCAM, designations have a strong, frosted finish on the design, which is set against a background field that is deeply mirrored and clear. The “P” mint mark identifies the coin as a product of the Philadelphia Mint.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse side of this coin. First used on the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin in 1907, Lady Liberty is seen striding over Washington DC with a torch held aloft in her right hand. The reverse side features sculptor Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of nesting eagles. In that image, a male returns to the female and hatchlings with an olive branch in its talons.
The United States Mint strikes the Gold American Eagle coins under the authorization of Congress, granted following passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Established in 1792, the US Mint is one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere.
