The Gold American Eagle shook off five years of sinking mintage figures in 1992 to bounce upward in demand. The conclusion of the first Gulf War and the rebounding economy at the time gave way to a minor downturn in the economy, but the price of gold did not experience a positive boost as a result.
Mintage of the 1992 1 oz Gold American Eagle coin went up from the previous year, climbing from a then-record low of 243,100 in 1991 to 275,000 coins in total. The price of gold for the year hovered between $335 and $350 per ounce, spiking above and dipping below that range at various times. Gold finished the year at $332.90 per ounce and averaged just $343.82 for the year.
On the obverse of the 1992 1 oz Gold American Eagle coin you’ll find the image of Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. His creation was on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, and is considered the most beautiful coin design in the history of American circulation coinage.
The reverse of the Gold American Eagle has a design found only on the coins in this program. Developed by Miley Busiek specifically for the Gold Eagle, this design features a male bald eagle flying over the nest where a group of hatchlings eats under the watchful eye of a female bald eagle.
