One of the world’s most popular gold bullion products is the Gold American Eagle. The coins are a favorite among investors and collectors; both for its inspiring design and quality production, as well as the fact that their value, weight, and content are backed by the US Mint and United States government. The 1992-P 1/10 oz Gold American Eagle is available from Silver.com with a PR70 grade from the PCGS.
The Gold American Eagle program was established by Congress in 1985 when the Gold Bullion Coin Act was passed. Each coin is produced using only gold sourced from within the US, and the design has remained the same on both sides of the coin since its introduction in 1986. This 1992-P Gold American Eagle is special because it marks a rare turning point in the coin’s design. Prior to 1992, the coins were dated with Roman numerals. Beginning with the 1992 Gold American Eagles, the US Mint switched to Arabic numbers for dating.
These 1992-P 1/10 oz Gold American Eagles feature a PR70 grade from the PCGS. A PR70 grade is reserved for coins that are considered perfectly struck proofs. The DCAM designation identifies the coin as having a strong, frosted design over a deeply mirrored, clear background field. The “P” mint mark indicates the coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
On the obverse is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Lady Liberty. First used in 1907 on the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin, Lady Liberty can be seen walking toward the viewer on each coin. She holds an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other. Her image is surrounded by 50 stars, one for each US state.
The reverse bears sculptor Miley Busiek’s image of a bald eagle family. In it, a male eagle returns to the female and hatchlings with an olive branch in its talons. Engravings on this side include “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust,” and the coin’s physical descriptors.
