Proof coinage as a collector’s item is a relatively modern trend. Mints originally struck proof coins as a means of testing the dies and coining presses used in the production of bullion coins for circulation. Proof coins struck during the test phase were kept by the mints as a means of archiving coin production.

Each of the 1994-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins in this product listing is available with a PF70 grade from the NGC. A perfect proof coin features its full, original luster, and no blemishes of any kind. Ultra-cameo refers to the strong, frosted finish on a design set overlaying a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.

These 1994-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins were the first struck at the West Point Mint following the changeover from the Philadelphia Mint. From the introduction of fractional-weight coins in the proof series in 1987 until 1993, all fractional Proof Gold American Eagles were struck in Philadelphia.

On the obverse of each coin is the image of Lady Liberty as created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The Irish-born Saint-Gaudens was hand-chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to revive the design of America’s gold coins.

The reverse features an image created by sculptor Miley Busiek in 1986. Her design focuses on a family of nesting bald eagles, with the male returning to the nest bearing an olive branch in its talons.
