The 1998 issue year of Proof Gold Eagle coins was one of the lowest overall mintage figures in the program’s history. The 1/10 oz coin released in 1998 had a total mintage of 39,395, which was actually the highest mintage figure of any of the proof Gold Eagles struck in 1998. The 1/10 oz coin has increasingly become the most popular purchase.
All 1998-W 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle Coins in this listing are perfect specimens from the NGC. Coins with a PF70 certification have full, original mint luster and lack all detracting flaws of any kind on the surface areas. An Ultra-cameo, or UCAM, coin features a strong, frosted design set and a background field that is deeply-mirrored and clear.
Proof Gold American Eagle coins debuted in 1986 along with the bullion version, but there was only a 1 oz weight available to purchase. The fractional weights in the series were introduced over a two-year period, with the 1/2 oz unveiled in 1987 and the 1/10 oz in 1988.
On the obverse of the Proof Gold Eagle you’ll find the most iconic image from the United States Mint. Created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the image was first used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin and featured Liberty walking forward from the nation’s capital with her torch as a guiding light.
The reverse of the 1998-W 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coin includes the bald eagle design. Created specifically for the Gold Eagle series in 1986 by Miley Busiek, the image features a nest full of hatchlings with a female eagle standing guard and a male eagle flying overhead.
