An Ultra-cameo coin has a beautiful finish. The coin’s design sets have a deep, frosted appearance and the background field features a deeply-mirrored, clear background field. The contrasting finishes give the impression of the design floating above the coin’s surface.
The 1998 issue of the 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagle marked the 10th annual release of the coins in this weight. Proof Gold Eagles were introduced in the 1/4 oz weight in 1988, two years after the coin program debuted from the United States Mint. Fractional-weight coins were introduced in 1987 and expanded in 1988. Only 29,503 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagles were struck in 1998, making it one of the lower mintage years.
On the obverse of the 1998-W 1/4 oz Proof Gold American Eagle you’ll find the Liberty design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Designed in 1907, it debuted on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin and was available from the US Mint in circulation until 1933.
The reverse of the Proof Gold American Eagle coin you’ll find the image of the American bald eagle. Miley Busiek created this design which depicts a male bald eagle flying over the nest, which holds a group of hatchlings under the watchful eye of a female bald eagle. This has featured on the reverse of all Gold Eagles exclusively since the debut of the coins.
