Gold American Eagle coins were introduced in 1986 in bullion and proof versions. The gold program includes coins in four different weights: 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. In 2006, a new uncirculated coin was added to the series to attract collectors interested in displaying the coins.
On the obverse side of all Gold American Eagle coins is the image of Lady Liberty, as created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1908. Saint-Gaudens inspired some of America’s greatest coin designers, such as Adolph A. Weinman, and was tasked by President Theodore Roosevelt with revamping American gold coins.
The reverse side features a family of nesting bald eagles, with the male depicted returning to the nest as the female stands guard vigilantly over the nest. Miley Busiek designed this image specifically for the Gold American Eagle coin program.
Each of the coins in this product listing is available in perfect condition. Coins with a PF70 grade have their full, brilliant luster, and no blemishes, contact marks, detracting flaws, or hairlines. The ultra-cameo finish identifies a coin with a strong, frosted design set, and a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
The United States Mint produces the majority of its Gold American Eagle coins at the New York coining press.
