Proof coins are popular among collectors today, but were not always struck for this purpose. Proof coinage originally existed for functional reasons. On one hand, mints struck these coins as proof of the quality of dies and accuracy of the coining press. Additionally, proof coins were collected by mints for use in production archives.
Gold American Eagle proof coins features the same obverse and reverse designs found on the bullion version of the coin, with all of the same weights available in both versions. Although Proof Gold American Eagle coins started with just a 1 oz coin available, fractional-weight coins were added in 1987 and 1988.
On the obverse is the image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In an effort to revive American gold coin design, President Theodore Roosevelt hand-picked Saint-Gaudens to help develop new designs for gold coins in the US.
The reverse side of the coin features Miley Busiek’s family of nesting bald eagles. This side of the coin also features the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin, as well as the face value, and the iconic American mottos of “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust.”
Each coin in this product listing is a perfect proof according to the PCGS. PR70 coins feature their full, original luster, and no detracting flaws. Deep-cameo is a term used to identify proof coins with a frosted design set that appears to float above the deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
