There are no two symbols in the world more closely associated with the United States of American than Lady Liberty and the Bald Eagle. Lady Liberty exemplifies the grace and freedom offered in America, while the Bald Eagle’s strength and stature makes it an American icon of power and vision. These two icons have been featured on numerous coins, both circulated and uncirculated, in American history. Since 1986, the two have been featured together on the 1 oz. Silver American Eagle coins.

The 1999 1 oz. Silver American Eagle features the same design and workmanship of the original coin in the American Eagle series. The first coins in the series were minted on November 24, 1986 by the United States Mint. The coins were authorized for production under the Liberty Coin Act of July 9, 1985 and are considered the official silver bullion coin of the United States.

Adolph A. Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” design is featured on all Silver American Eagle coins. Weinman originally designed the “Walking Liberty” figure in 1916 for use on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin. This coin was in circulation from 1916-1947, and Lady Liberty lives on today on the Silver American Eagle.

John Mercanti, the US Mint’s chief engraver, is the man responsible for the design of the eagle on the coins in this series. Mercanti’s Bald Eagle engraving features a heraldic eagle behind a shield. Echoing the appearance of the Great Seal of the United States, the eagle clasps an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left talon. Above the eagle’s head are 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies of the United States of America.

Every Silver American Eagle that has been minted since 1986 features the same design. On the obverse side of the coin is Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” stamp. Lady Liberty is featured walking toward the setting sun, with the word “Liberty” stamped above her head and the phrase “In God We Trust” stamped below. On the reverse side is Mercanti’s heraldic eagle. Above the symbol is the phrase “United States of America,” and below is the phrase “1 oz. Fine Silver – One Dollar.”
