Gold American Eagle coins debuted from the United States Mint in 1986 with a bullion and proof version. The bullion coins debuted immediately with all four weights available to purchase, but the proof coins only had a 1 oz weight available.
In 1987 the mint unveiled a 1/2 oz version of the coin, with the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins released for collectors in 1988. Since then, the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins have been the more popular options in the collection due to their smaller size and more affordable pricing point. Mintage figures were rising in the late 1990s, with the 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagle that year reaching 34,417 coins.
Each of the 1999-W 1/4 oz Proof Gold American Eagle Coins available here today is in PF70 condition. Coins with this certification have full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws visible on the surface areas.
The Ultra-cameo designation, also known as UCAM, is available for proof coins with a strong, frosted design set and a deeply-mirrored, clear background field. Coins with this beautiful finish have a visual effect that makes the design appear to float above the coin’s surface.
On the obverse of the Proof Gold Eagle is the nation’s greatest coin design of all time. Lady Liberty was designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who was tapped by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to revamp all of the nation’s coins.
The reverse of the 1999-W 1/4 oz Proof Gold American Eagle Coin includes the image of an American bald eagle. The eagles are featured with a group of hatchlings in the nest and a female standing guard, with a male eagle flying over the nest. Created by Miley Busiek, this design appears only on the Gold American Eagle coins.
