Proof Gold American Eagle coins were introduced by the United States Mint for the first time in 1986. The official gold bullion coin of the US, the Gold American Eagle is one of the most popular coin series in the world. Those interested in purchasing a perfect proof coin, Silver.com now offers the 1999-W 1 oz Proof Gold American Eagle.

Coin Highlights:

  • Actual gold content of 1 troy oz. 22 Karat pure gold.
  • Issued a face value of $50 (USD) by the US government.
  • Graded a perfect PF70 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • Available with an ultra-cameo finish.
  • Bears a “W” mint mark from the West Point Mint.
  • Ships in an NGC plastic slab.

Congress authorized production of the Gold American Eagle with passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The first coins were produced in 1986, with original production consisting of bullion and proof versions. The coins are available in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz weights with face values representative of the weights, except the ¼ oz coin.

On the obverse side is the iconic image of Lady Liberty designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. His depiction was first created for use on the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, but never appeared on the coin before his death in 1908.

The reverse side of the coin bears the namesake image of the coin. A family of nesting bald eagles is visible, with a male returning holding an olive branch as the female stands on guard over the hatchlings. Sculptor Miley Busiek was tasked with creating a bald eagle image in 1985.

Each of the coins in this listing has its full, brilliant luster as it did when it left the mint. There are no blemishes, contact marks, or detracting flaws on the surface. Ultra-cameo coins have a strong, frosted design and deeply-mirrored, clear background field.

The United States Mint produces most of its Gold American Eagle coins at the West Point Mint, but other facilities contribute to special edition coins.
