One of the most popular coins from American coining history is the $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle coin. Struck by the US Mint for 57 years, the primary features of the design changed little over time. Today, these coins are hard to find as the government collected and melted all circulation gold coins during the Great Depression. Right now, you have the chance to purchase a $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle on Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Extremely limited availability.
  • Consists of .9675 ounces of .900 fine gold.
  • Face value of $20 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Struck at US Mint facilities.
  • Available in Almost Uncirculated condition.

Congress authorized the production of a new line of gold coins in 1849 in response to the vast excess of gold in the Treasury Department courtesy of the California Gold Rush of 1848. Liberty Double Eagle coins entered circulation in 1850, and went through three design changes. Between 1850 and 1866, the motto “In God We Trust” was absent. The motto was added in 1866, with the face value inscribed as “Twenty D” at this time, as well. In 1877, the face value was altered to read “Twenty Dollars.”

Each of the $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle coins in this listing is in Almost Uncirculated condition. AU coins have only a slight amount of wear visible on the surface, and have a Sheldon numeric scale grading anywhere between 50 and 58.

On the obverse side of each coin is James B. Longacre’s depiction of Lady Liberty. Based upon early Greek images of Liberty, Longacre’s design shows Liberty in left-profile relief. Her crown bears the word “Liberty” on it, and her image is encircled by 13 stars and the year of minting.

The reverse features an intricately designed heraldic eagle. The eagle is set behind a heraldic shield, with the arrows of war in one talon and olive branch of peace in the other. Engravings on this side include the face value of the coin and “United States of America.”

Numerous US Mint facilities contributed to coining of these $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle coins, including the Philadelphia, San Francisco, Denver, Carson City, and New Orleans facilities.
