One of the nation’s longest running coin series of all time was the $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle. Struck by the US Mint between 1850 and 1907, these coins were borne of the excess gold stores created by the California Gold Rush of 1848. Although few exist today compared to the coin’s total mintage figures, you have the chance today to purchase a $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle now from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Limited availability!
  • Consists of .9675 ounces of .900 fine gold.
  • Issued a face value of $20 (USD) by the federal government.
  • Struck at multiple United States Mint facilities.
  • Available now in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

Gold coins became more common in the United States following minor gold discoveries in Georgia and the Carolinas in the 1830s, but it was the California Gold Rush of 1848 that left the country awash in gold. Congress authorized the production of a complete line of gold coins from $1 (USD) to $20 (USD) in value in 1849.

These $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagles were struck over the course of 57 years, with three types produced in total. All coins featured the same obverse and reverse design, with minor changes made. Type I coins (1850-1866) lacked the motto “In God We Trust” on the reverse. Type II coins (1866-1876) had the motto, with the face value inscribed “Twenty D.” Type III coins had the face value changed to “Twenty Dollars.”

Each coin in this product listing is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. A BU coin shows no trace of wear and tear, but may have visible contact marks, spotted surfaces, or breaks in the luster.

On the obverse of each coin is the image of Lady Liberty. Her left-profile bust is surrounded by 13 stars, representing the nation’s original colonies, with the year of minting struck below her head.

The reverse depicts the heraldic eagle. The bird is featured behind the heraldic shield, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. On Type II and Type III coins, the motto “In God We Trust” is inscribed inside a 13-star circle.
