After hitting an all-time high for mintage in 1999, the 2000 1 oz Gold American Eagle coin came back down to Earth. The total mintage of 433,319 marked a drop of more than 1 million coins in mintage and for the second year in a row was less than that of the 1/10 oz version of the Gold Eagle bullion coin.
On the obverse of 2000 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coins you’ll find the image of Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design was created in 1907 as the United States underwent a massive effort to redesign all of its circulation coinage. This depiction shows Liberty striding forth from the national capital and appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse of all Gold American Eagle coins includes the image of a family of bald eagles. Created by Miley Busiek in 1986, it is exclusive to the Gold Eagle coinage. It features a family of bald eagles in their nest, with a female watching over the hatchlings as a male flies overhead.
Gold prices in 2000 remained relatively low despite the economic turmoil of the past few years. Gold started the year at $282 per ounce and ended just below $274 per ounce, with an average for the year of $279.11.
