As the Gold American Eagle coin program entered the 21st century, demand for the coins reached heights not seen since the coin’s introduction in 1986. Although the number of coins produced around the turn of the 21st century was high, the availability of perfect specimens remains low. Right now, offers the 2000-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coin to collectors in perfect condition.

  • Consists of a true gold content of one-half troy ounce.
  • Face value of $25 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Available in Ultra-cameo finish.
  • Features a “W” mint mark from the West Point Mint.
  • Coins ship in NGC plastic slabs to protect the perfect condition.

Gold American Eagle coins were first introduced in 1986 with Congressional approval of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The bill authorized production of an official gold bullion coin for the nation, which would feature bullion and proof versions. Since that time, an additional burnished coin has been added to the series in 2006.

Production of Gold American Eagle coins has ebbed and flowed over the course of nearly 30 years as the United States Mint strikes coins to match demand at the time. When the coins were first introduced, they were immensely popular for a few years. Subsequent spikes occurred in the early 1990s, at the turn of the 21st century amidst the Y2K craze, and during the recent Great Recession.

Each of the 2000-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins in this product listing features a perfect PF70 grade from the NGC. A perfect coin has its full, original mint luster, and no hairlines, contact marks, spotted surfaces, or other blemishes. These coins also bear an ultra-cameo finish, meaning the design set is frosted and the background field is deeply-mirrored and clear.

On the obverse of all coins is the depiction of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. It originally appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933. The reverse bears sculptor Miley Busiek’s family of bald eagles, which is exclusive to the Gold American Eagle series.
