When President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to breathe new life into the appearance of American gold coins, he turned to Irish-born artist and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. As a well-known artist, Saint-Gaudens was chosen by President Roosevelt in 1905 to come up with a new design to use on American gold coins.

His Lady Liberty depiction originally consisted of a full-length figure of Liberty, surrounded by 46 stars. By the time the image was ready for striking on gold coins, New Mexico and Arizona had joined the Union, and two stars had to be added to the design after Saint-Gaudens’ death in 1907.

On the obverse side of each 2004-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle is Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Liberty. Further upgraded from its original circulation run (1907-1933), this coin features 50 stars to represent the additions of Hawaii and Alaska.

The reverse side of all Gold American Eagle coins bears the image of a family of bald eagles in its nest. The male is featured returning to the nest with an olive branch, where a female stands vigilant watch of the hatchlings.

Each of the coins in this product listing features a PF70 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition feature full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind. Ultra-cameo refers to the coin’s frosted design set and deeply-mirrored background field.
