The Gold American Eagle is one of the most popular coins in the world today. First introduced in 1986, the Gold American Eagle is the official gold bullion product of the US government. These coins are struck on an annual basis in bullion, proof, and uncirculated versions. Right now, the 2005-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle is available on Silver.com in perfect condition.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a PCGS plastic slab to protect the coin’s condition.
  • Consists of a true weight of one-half troy ounce of gold.
  • Bears a face value of $25 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Graded PR70 by the PCGS.
  • Available with a Deep-cameo finish.
  • Features the “W” mint mark from the West Point Mint.

Proof Gold American Eagle coins are the collector’s version of the nation’s official gold bullion product. While the coin’s bullion version featured four total weights the first year of offering in 1986, the proof coin was only available beginning in 1987. Originally produced at the Philadelphia Mint, all ½ oz proof coins are now produced by the West Point Mint.

Each 2005-W ½ oz Gold American Eagle in this product listing has a perfect PR70 grade from the PCGS. Coins of this caliber have their full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind.

The Deep-cameo designation refers to the visual finish of the coin. The design set features a strong, frosted matte finish, and overlays a background field that is deeply-mirrored, and clear. This combination of effects creates the appearance of a design that floats above the background.

On the obverse of all Proof Gold American Eagle coins is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Lady Liberty. First used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, it has been the official design for the Gold American Eagle since 1986.

The reverse features a unique design found only on Gold American Eagle coins. Sculptor and artist Miley Busiek designed an image of a family of bald eagles for the reverse. In her depiction, a male flies over the nest, while a female stands guard over a group of hatchlings.
