America’s economy had largely recovered from Y2K and the downturn following 9/11 by 2005, but the situation in the global economy was jittery as the War on Terror raged on in two different hotspots around the globe. Economic woes were slight, but existent, and this meant high demand for both bullion and proof versions of the Silver American Eagle.
2005 had a total bullion mintage of 8.89 million, effectively unchanged from the previous year. 2005-W Proof Silver American Eagle production was up slightly to 816,000, marking a fourth-consecutive year of increases in demand for the proof version. In fact, the proof mintage of 816,663 coins in 2005 is the seventh highest in the history of the Silver American Eagle.
Adolph A. Weinman’s stunning depiction of Walking Liberty was chosen in 1985 as the official obverse design for the Silver American Eagle. Created in 1916, it appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar through 1947 and went unused for 39 years before it was resurrected and refined for the Silver American Eagle.
John Mercanti, then-US Mint Chief Engraver, designed the heraldic eagle featured on the reverse. Heraldic eagle designs have featured on American currency since the first coins left the Philadelphia Mint in 1793. Mercanti modernized and re-envisioned the design for the nation’s official silver bullion coin.
