The Proof Gold American Eagle coin is one of the most coveted collector’s coins in the world. Although the design features don’t change on a yearly basis, the coin’s iconic images and guaranteed 22-karat gold content make it a must-have for serious numismatists. Today, the 2006-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle is available on Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships to you in a plastic slab to protect the coin’s condition, courtesy of the NGC.
  • Consists of a true gold content of one-half troy ounce.
  • Face value of $25 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Earned a grade of PF70 from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • Available with an Ultra-cameo finish.
  • Features a “W” mint mark from the West Point Mint.

The 2006 production year marked a special occasion for the nation’s official bullion coin programs. Both the Silver and Gold American Eagle coins celebrated their 20th anniversary of production. The first Gold American Eagle coins were struck in 1986 in bullion and proof, with four weights available in bullion and one (1 oz) in proof.

Today, the Gold American Eagle is produced in all four weights (1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz) across both the bullion and proof series, with the burnished coin available in 1 oz. The burnished Gold American Eagle was introduced in 2006 as part of the 20th anniversary celebration. During this year, extra proof coins were struck for use in a 20th Anniversary American Eagle Coin Set.

Each of the 2006-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagles available in this listing was produced for individual sale and features a perfect PF70 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition have their full, original luster and no blemishes of any kind. Ultra-cameo refers to a coin with a design set that appears to float above the background field.

On the obverse face is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic depiction of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907, the image would not appear on the $20 Gold Double Eagle until several months after Saint-Gaudens passed away from illness.

The reverse face features a family of bald eagles in its nest, with the male flying overhead as the female keeps a vigilant watch on the hatchlings.
