Gold American Eagle coins were introduced by the United States Mint in 1986 following congressional approval of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The bill authorized the production of a bullion and proof coin for the federal government, with the stipulation that all coins in the series consist only of gold sourced from within the United States.

When the coins were introduced, the bullion version was available in four weights. This included a 1 oz coin, and three fractional-weight coins of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. These 1/10 oz weight coins were the first fractional-weight products introduced in the proof program, arriving just one year after the original introduction in 1987.

Each Gold American Eagle in this Silver.com product listing features a PF70 grade from the NGC. Perfect coins are highlighted by the presence of their full, original mint luster and no blemishes, hairlines, or contact marks of any kind.

On the obverse of each is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty image. First appearing on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin in 1907, Saint-Gaudens was never able to see his design come to life as the coins didn’t debut until several months after his passing from illness.

The reverse features a unique design of the bald eagle. Miley Busiek’s image shows a male bald eagle as it returns to the family nest, and is exclusive to the Gold American Eagle coin series.
