Mount Hood serves as the whipped topping on the national forest that surrounds it, jutting 11,249 feet into the air. The mountain is the host of 12 glaciers and is the result of volcanic activity millions of years ago as the subduction of the Pacific plate under the continental plate of North America. Mount Hood National Forest was established in 1908, and attracts an annual average of 4.4 million visitors.
The 2010 5 oz Mount Hood ATB Silver Coin was the fifth and final coin released during the introductory 2010 production year of the America the Beautiful series. Each year, a total of five new coins are released commemorating American monuments, moments, and places.
On the reverse is the image of Mount Hood, towering in the distance over a lake and forest featured in the foreground. Engravings read “Oregon,” “Mount Hood,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and the year of minting. The left-profile bust of President George Washington is featured on the obverse.
