The US Mint has been in continuous operation for well over 200 years and, during that time, has risen to become one of the most prestigious mints in the world. Their products are regularly known for their attention to detail and high purities, and the America the Beautiful series is no different. Every year plays host to a new release, and with each new release comes an entirely different theme. For the inaugural 2010 edition, America’s vast and beautiful National Parks are celebrated.
During the late 19th century, as Americans began more readily populating the Western expanses of North America, there arose a need to both preserve and celebrate the natural beauty of the American landscape. Recognizing this need was Theodore Roosevelt who, during his time in office, set the National Park System into motion. Before long, National Parks were popping up all over the country.
Founded in 1890, Yosemite National Park, located in central California, was one of the first National Parks to be sanctioned. The park itself is more than 750,000 acres and is located in at least part of three different Californian counties (Tuolumne, Mariposa, and Madera). What is most intriguing about this particular National Park is the rugged terrain that changes in the blink of an eye. From pleasant, sparsely populated forests to sharp mountain peaks, Yosemite has it all.
The obverse side of the 5 oz ATB Yosemite silver coin features lifelike imagery and beautifully depicts the expansiveness of the Yosemite National Park. The obverse’s image features a downed tree and serene lake in the foreground, while an imposing sheer cliff face dominates the background. The rock wall is so detailed that you can easily identify each and every minor imperfection. Inscribed on the obverse are the words “Yosemite”, “California”, and “E Pluribus Unum.” The 2010 year of production is also located on the coin’s obverse.
As is the case with every America the Beautiful series coin, the reverse side is modeled to look identical to a US quarter. Down to the $0.25 face value, the coin’s design is unmistakable.
