Proof Gold American Eagle coins feature the design of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The artist and sculptor was hand-picked by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help revitalize American coin design. Saint-Gaudens’ image was crafted in 1907, and appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.

Today, Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty image appears in beautiful proof on the Gold American Eagle. Featured on the obverse of all coins in the series, the depiction of Lady Liberty shows her as she strides forward into the future. The darkness indicated by the setting sun at her back is held at bay by the torch she carries in her right hand.

The reverse of each coin depicts a male bald eagle as it returns to the nest with an olive branch. The image also features a female eagle as it guards the nest and hatchlings, and was created specifically for these coins by Miley Busiek in 1986.

Each of the coins in this Silver.com product listing is available in perfect PF70 grade. Coins in this condition feature full, original mint luster, and no detracting flaws of any kind. These coins also feature an ultra-cameo finish, which is defined as a coin with a frosted design that appears to float above a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
