The African elephant is one of the most majestic animals in the world. Large, powerful, and lumbering, the elephant creates a sense of awe when seen in person. Tragically, these beautiful animals continue to be hunted to near-extinction by humans looking to profit on the ivory found in their tusks. The Bavarian Central Mint celebrates the elephant on the 2013 1 oz Silver Somalian Elephant Coin. Today, you can purchase this coin from Silver.com in brilliant uncirculated condition.

African elephants are the largest terrestrial animals on the face of the planet. The species is actually split into two distinct creatures: the bush elephant and the forest elephant. Though the average human may not be able to tell the difference immediately, the forest elephant is actually smaller than the bush elephant. Forest elephants are still large in their own right, ranking as the third largest terrestrial creature on the planet.

On the reverse side of the 2013 1 oz Silver Somalian Elephant Coin, three bush elephants can be seen strolling through the tall grass beneath a full moon. In the image, two adult elephants are featured in the foreground, with their calf trailing behind in the background. Engravings on this side of the coin include “African Wildlife,” “Elephant,” and the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.

The obverse side bears the national emblem of the Somali Republic. The coat of arms features a single star on the face of a shield, with two large, wild cats on either side. Engravings on this side include “Somali Republic,” the year of minting, and the face value of the coin in Shillings.

The Bavarian Central Mint is one of four world-famous German mints, and is located in Munich, Germany. The Mint is responsible for producing circulation and commemorative currency for nations throughout Europe and around the globe. All coins leaving the Bavarian Central Mint bear a “D” mint mark. The mint opened its doors for operation in 1871.
