When most people think of famous American naval battles from history, they think of the Union blockade of the South during the Civil War, the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana, Cuba to launch the Spanish-American War, or the epic conflict with Japan in the Pacific during World War II. One of the nation’s most significant naval battles ever came along the shores of Ohio on the Great Lakes. The 2013 5 oz Perry’s Victory ATB Silver Coin captures the lasting peace enjoyed after this battle, and is featured now on Silver.com.

During the War of 1812, one of the nation’s most important naval clashes occurred during the Battle of Lake Erie. Here, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led an American fleet to victory over the heavily favored British. His efforts prevented the landfall of British soldiers behind the American Colonies, and removed the possibility that the fledgling nation could be squeezed from the interior and coastal areas of the nation.
America the Beautiful honors Perry’s victory and International Peace Memorial as the representative of the state of Ohio. Each year, five new coin designs are unveiled marking key moments and places from American history, as well as national parks and forests. The 56-coin series is scheduled to run through 2021.
On the obverse side of the coin is the image of Oliver Hazard Perry’s statue, with the Memorial Column rising high behind it. The reverse bears the image of President George Washington, as commonly found on American quarters.
The coins in this product listing are available in near-perfect condition, meaning that each has its full, original luster, and no more than two minor detracting flaws. The deeply-mirrored, proof-like finish is rare on a bullion coin, and adds display value to this product.
