The Royal Canadian Mint is famous for many of its different coins, but its lunar-inspired designs are among the most popular offered on an annual basis. In a unique release, the RCM made limited-edition gold coins in gram weights available with different lunar designs than its primary coins. The 2014 $150 Gold Canadian Year of the Horse Coin is currently available in BU condition on Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Limited release of just 2,500 coins in 2014!
  • Fifth coin in the 12-year series from the Royal Canadian Mint.
  • Ships in a case to protect the coin’s condition.
  • Includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
  • Consists of 11.84 grams, or .3806 troy ounces, of 18-karat fine gold.
  • Issued a face value of $150 (CAD) by the Canadian government.
  • Available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
  • Designed by Aries Cheung.

Aries Cheung is the designer behind these unique 11.8 gram gold lunar coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. A Canadian artist, Cheung’s designs are not used on the other coins in the series, and reserved only for these $150 coins.

The 2014 $150 Gold Canadian Year of the Horse coins in this product listing on Silver.com are available with a Brilliant Uncirculated condition. A BU coin has no signs of wear and tear, but you will notice flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks.

On the reverse is Cheung’s designs of a horse in full gallop. Accompanying the design are the engravings of the nation of issue, the year of issue, the coin’s face value, and the Chinese symbol for horse.

The obverse features the popular right-profile design from Susanna Blunt. A Canadian artist, Blunt captured Her Majesty in 2003 for use on Canadian coin designs. Engravings on this side include only the Queen’s name and the phrase “D.G. Regina.”

Royal Canadian Mint facilities first opened in Ottawa in 1908 to process and refine precious metals discovered in the Yukon Territories at the end of the 19th century. Following decades of demand, the Royal Canadian Mint expanded its capacity with the completion of a Winnipeg facility in the 1980s.
