Featured on the front side of the coin is the majestic sheep. Upon looking at the coin, you see that this particular sheep is a ram, complete with strong, curved horns and a confident stature. Behind the sheep, it is easy to place the bamboo forest it stands in. This lends to the Asian aspect of the coin, as bamboo is often associated with China and other Asian nations since it is widely found in nature in those areas of the world. At the bottom right corner of the coin, you will see the Chinese character for “sheep.” To the right is the phrase “YEAR OF THE SHEEP” in both English and French, which pays homage to the English and French languages which are found throughout the country. The word “CANADA,” the year “2015” and the phrase “5 DOLLARS” is also seen.
The opposite side of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in profile. The attention to detail is quite noticeable whether you are focusing in on the pearls around her neck or the waves in her hair. Her name, “ELIZABETH II” is engraved into the left side of the coin and the phrase “D.G. Regina,” a Latin phrase, is engraved on the right side. Translated to English, it means “Queen by the Grace of God.”
