Gold Philharmonics are the official gold bullion coin of Austria. The Austrian Mint has been producing the coins since 1989, when it produced the 1/4 oz and 1 oz coins. The 1/10 oz and 1/2 oz coins were introduced in 1991 and 1994, respectively. The latest coin added to the series was the 1/25 Gold Austrian Philharmonic, which was added to the series in 2014. Thomas Pesendorfer is responsible for the design that is featured on both sides of the coin. Like many other official gold bullion coin series, the designs on each side do not change from year to year.

On the obverse side of the 2015 1/2 oz Gold Austrian Philharmonic coin is Pesendorfer’s depiction of the Golden Hall at the Musikverein. The words “Republik Osterreich” are engraved above the image, while the weight, purity, metal content, year of minting, and face value of the coin are engraved below.

The reverse side of the coin features a representation of all the instruments used by members of the Vienna Philharmonic. The image includes a Vienna horn, bassoon, harp, four violins, and a cello. Pesendorfer, the Austrian Mint’s chief engraver, is again responsible for the image on this side.

Duke Leopold VI founded the Austrian Mint in 1194 with 15 tonnes of silver paid to him as ransom to provide free passage of Richard the Lionheart’s army through Austria. Today, the facility produces some of the finest coins in the world.
