  • Face value of $50 backed by the US government.

The American West was characterized by lawlessness and wide open spaces. One of the most powerful beasts to ever roam the vast open spaces of the Wild West was the buffalo. Massive and powerful, yet seemingly docile from a distant, the buffalo was key to the survival of many Native American tribes and was driven to near-extinction by the progress of industrialization.

The Gold American Buffalo coin was first minted by the US Mint in 2006, garnering immediate interest among investors and numismatists alike. The 2015 1 oz Gold American Buffalo Coins feature the same design that has been used since 2006. James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel serves as the inspiration for the imagery on this coin.

On the obverse side of the 2015 1 oz Gold American Buffalo is the Indian Head image. Inscriptions on this side include the word “LIBERTY” and the year of minting (2015). The reverse side of the coin features the image of Black Diamond, complete with engravings of “United States of America,” the face value ($50), the phrases “In God We Trust” and “E Pluribus Unum,” as well as the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.

  2. Unlike many .9999 pure gold coins, this lacks any flat surfaces to reflect the rich, lustrous color of the metal. I prefer the Canadian Maple Leaf, the Austrian Philharmonic, or the Chinese Panda, for example, all which have beautifully reflective surfaces. That said, the color of the Gold Buffalo coin is exquisite, as is the detail of the face and the Buffalo. Unfortunately the background is mottled instead of smooth, which would have made this an absolutely GORGEOUS coin. Still it’s made by the US mint, and currently the only option for a contemporary American .9999 pure gold coin.
