America’s official silver bullion coin program was initiated in 1986, and coins have been struck each year since in 1 oz weights. The image of Lady Liberty used on the Silver American Eagle Coin dates back to 1916 when Adolph A. Weinman designed Walking Liberty for use on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. His imagery lives on today on the reverse side of the Silver American Eagle.
These 2015 1 oz Silver American Eagle coins have one unique design feature that sets them apart from the standard bullion coins: a gilded finish. The image of Lady Liberty, the mountains, and the setting sun at her feet have all been covered in 24-karat gold to create contrast between the coin’s design feature and its background field.
On the reverse side of the coin is Weinman’s image of Lady Liberty. Draped in the stars and stripes of the American flag, she walks toward the setting sun as a symbol of America’s constant march towards a brighter future. The obverse side of the coin displays John Mercanti’s depiction of the heraldic eagle. This image has not been altered in any way.
The United States Mint was founded in 1792, making it one of the oldest facilities in the Western Hemisphere. The Mint operates four primary facilities in San Francisco, Denver, Philadelphia, and West Point, though it previously operated other mints in locations such as Carson City and New Orleans.
