Each of the 2015 Silver Australian Kookaburra coins in this product listing is considered a near-perfect specimen by the NGC. Coins with an MS69 grade have their full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws may be blemishes, contact marks, or small hairlines, and are found outside the primary focal areas of the coin.
Kookaburra coins were introduced in 1990 as the first recurring wildlife-themed bullion coins from the Perth Mint. Today, the Silver Australian Koala and Silver Australian Kangaroo coin programs owe their existence to the success of the Kookaburra over the course of 25 years.
On the reverse side is the image of a single kookaburra on the stump of a tree. Kookaburras are small birds native to the Australian continent, and they are notable for a human-like laugh that often catches bystanders off guard.
The obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 right-profile effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. His design is the fourth-generation depiction of England’s longest serving monarch, and is featured on all Commonwealth coins.
Australia’s Perth Mint is a state-owned entity of Western Australia. Though it predates the Royal Australian Mint, it is not the sovereign mint of Australia, though its coins do enjoy legal-tender status under the Currency Act of 1965.
