Austria’s Vienna Philharmonic orchestra is considered one of the finest musical groups in the world. The orchestra was founded in 1842 and performs the majority of its concerts at the Musikverein Hall in the Innere Stadt borough of Vienna. Since 2008, the Austrian Mint has paid homage to the nation’s orchestra with the release of the 1 oz Austrian Silver Philharmonic coin. Investors looking to make a major investment in silver can do so with the 2015 1 oz Silver Austrian Philharmonic Monster Box, containing 500 coins.

The Austrian Mint first released the 1 oz Silver Austrian Philharmonic in February 2008, but the concept was nearly 20 years in the making at that point. The design used on the Silver Austrian Philharmonic was originally created for use on a gold commemorative coin by Thomas Pesendorfer. The gold coin was first released in 1989, and has continued (unchanged) on the silver coin since its introduction in 2008.

The 2015 1 oz Silver Austrian Philharmonic Monster Box includes 500 individual coins that have two designs inspired by the Vienna Philharmonic. On one side is a depiction of the pipe organ from Musikverein, while the opposite side has a cornucopia of instruments used by members of the orchestra. Each coin in the monster box has never been circulated and therefore will be in brand new condition.

On the obverse side of the 2015 1 oz. Silver Austrian Philharmonic is the image of a pipe organ as seen in the Musikverein. Above the image of the pipe organ is the phrase “Republik Osterreich” (Republic of Austria). Below the image is the phrase “1 Unze Feinsilber” (1 ounce pure silver).

The reverse side of the coin features a number of different instruments used by the musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. Included in the image are instruments such as the Viennese horn, bassoon, violin, cello, and string bass. Above the image are the engravings “Wiener Philharmoniker” (Vienna Philharmonic) and “Silber” (Silver).
