African Elephants first appeared on a coin series in 1999 as part of the African Wildlife Series. Although the coins are still struck as part of that series today, from 1999 to 2003 the coins represented a different African nation. It wasn’t until 2004 that the coins were struck on behalf of Somalia. Despite the coin’s modern popularity, its status as legal tender in Somalia is unclear due to the nation’s political instability.

Each coin available to you through this product listing is available with an MS69 grade. Coins in this grade have their full, original luster, with no more than two small non-detracting contact marks or flaws.

On the reverse side of the coin is the latest image of an elephant featured on the Silver Somalian Elephant series. In the depiction, a female elephant (cow) is featured leading her calf across the savannas of Africa.

The obverse side of the coin bears the coat of arms for Somalia. The nation’s symbol features wild cats holding either side of the national shield, which has a single star in the middle of a field of horizontal lines. The coin’s face value, year of minting, and “Somali Republic” are all engraved on this side.

The Bavarian State Mint is located in Munich, Germany, and is one of that nation’s five state-owned mints. The mint has been operating since 1158, producing gold and silver coins, medals, and seals.
