The African Wildlife Series featuring the Somalian Elephant launched for the first time in 2004. Original mintage for these coins was kept extremely low, with many of the coins from the early years restricted to just 5,000. In 2009, mintage jumped to 130,000 amid financial crises around the globe and increased demand for this specific product.
What makes the Silver Somalian Elephant particularly attractive to investors and collectors is the changing design sets. While the motif consistently focuses on the elephant, the specific design is altered each year to feature elephants in different environments on the continent.
Each of these coins comes with special privy mark from the World’s Fair of Money. Held in Chicago, IL and hosted by the American Numismatic Association, each coin features a privy mark on the obverse that includes the iconic Willis Tower and the engraving “ANA.”
On the obverse side, along with the ANA Chicago privy, is the all-new elephant design for 2015. In the image, a female adult leads her young calf on a march across Africa’s savanna. The reverse side of the coin features the coat of arms for the Republic of Somalia. The coin’s year of minting and face value are included on this side.
The Bavarian State Mint is a state-owned entity of Germany’s Free State of Bavaria. One of the nation’s five major state-owned facilities, the Bavarian State Mint was founded in 1158, making it one of the world’s oldest mints.
