The Perth Mint of Australia has released a number of brilliant proof coins celebrating Gene Roddenberry’s body of work in the Star Trek franchise. The first coins released in the series commemorated captains and Starfleet ships from The Original Series, and subsequent releases have come in order of the character and series appearance in the franchise.
In one of the latest releases from the Perth Mint, the first female commanding officer of a starship in Star Trek history, Captain Kathryn Janeway, is featured on the reverse side of one of these two brilliant coins. The reverse side of the second coin features an image of the starship she commanded through the 7-season run of Star Trek:Voyager.
All coins in the Star Trek series share a common obverse design, that of the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The longest-serving monarch in British history has had her image updated four times throughout her reign to reflect her age. This image is from 1998 and was created by Ian Rank-Broadley.
These two coins were produced in extremely limited numbers of just 6,500 in total. Of those, 5,000 coins from each product line were released for individual purchase, with just 1,500 of each set aside for this limited-edition two-coin set.
Australia’s Perth Mint is the nation’s oldest operating facility. Once a part of the Royal Mint system under British colonial control, it is now a state-owned entity of the Western Australia government.
