There are few images from American history more iconic than those of Liberty and the bald eagle. A modern interpretation of Justice, from antiquity, Liberty represents the fundamentals and beliefs of the nation. The bald eagle, America’s national emblem since 1792, characterizes majesty, power, and longevity. Both icons feature prominently on the nation’s official gold bullion coin. Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ was a visionary artist and sculptor whose coin design of Lady Liberty was more than a century ahead of its time in design and finish. Saint-Gaudens originally created Lady Liberty in 1907 as an ultra-high-relief proof design. Lacking the technology to realize this vision, the US Mint did the best it could to bring his design to life.
The image features Lady Liberty as she strides forward on the coin’s surface. Her hair and robes flowing behind her, she holds a torch aloft in her right hand as a guiding light and an olive branch in her left as a symbol of peace. Her figure is outlined by the rays of the setting sun, and the US Capitol Building in Washington DC is visible at her feet.
Each of the 2016 ¼ oz Gold American Eagle coins in this Silver.com product listing is a Brilliant Uncirculated product. BU coins have no signs of wear and tear, but you may notice breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
On the obverse is Saint-Gaudens original $20 Gold Double Eagle coin design from 1907, with minor updates including 50 stars to represent the addition of Hawaii and Alaska to the Union. The reverse features a family of nesting bald eagles, with the male returning to a home where hatchlings are watched by a vigilant female.
All bullion versions of the Gold American Eagle have been produced at the West Point Mint facility since the coin series was introduced in 1986.
