The official silver coin of the People’s Republic of China since 1983, the proof version of this coin has the distinction of being available for a longer period of time than its bullion counterpart. Unlike so many other coins, Silver Chinese Panda proof coins arrived in the marketplace before bullion versions. Right now, the 2016 1 Kilo Proof Silver Chinese Panda coin is available on Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Limited release proof edition Panda!
  • Arrives in a commemorative box including Certificate of Authenticity.
  • Consists of 1 Kilogram, or 32.15t troy ounces, of .999 fine silver.
  • Bears a face value of ¥300 (Yuan) backed by the government of China.
  • Features the latest panda design on the obverse. Temple of Heaven on the reverse.

In 2016, the Chinese Mint began producing its popular Chinese Panda coins with weights and metal contents measured in grams rather than the popular Troy ounces used by most over sovereign and private mints. The 1 kilogram coin in both silver and gold is the only coin in the series to remain unchanged, as it’s been available for years in this 1 Kilogram weight.

The Chinese Mint shifted a number of other coins down slightly in weight to accommodate the shift to Grams from Troy ounces. For example, the 50 Yuan and 10 Yuan Silver Chinese Panda coins are now available as 150 Gram and 30 Gram coins, respectively, which is down from their previous weights of 5 Troy ounces (155.5 grams) and 1 Troy ounce (31.1 grams).

On the obverse of the coin is the latest image of the nation’s cuddly, unofficial emblem. The panda is featured crawling along a fallen tree branch. Engravings include the face value of the coin and its weight, purity, and metal content.

The reverse continues to feature the brilliant image of the Temple of Heaven, viewed from the outside. The temple has stood in south-central Beijing since the mid-1500s as a social, cultural, and religious meeting place. Engravings on this face include the coin’s year of issue and the name “People’s Republic of China” in Mandarin.
