Silver American Eagle coins were introduced in 1986 with bullion and proof versions available. Although 2016 is the 30th anniversary of the Silver Eagle, not all versions of the coin have been produced throughout its 30 year history. The proof coin, though introduced in 1986, was not struck in 2009. The burnished version was introduced in 2006, making this the 10th anniversary of the burnished Silver American Eagle.

The 2016 Silver American Eagles available for purchase today are considered perfect specimens by the PCGS. Any coin with an MS70 grade has its full, original luster from the mint and bears no detracting flaws on any of its surfaces.

Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design was chosen for use on the obverse of the Silver American Eagle coin in 1986. One of the greatest designs in the history of American coinage, the Walking Liberty image depicts Lady Liberty as she strides confidently toward the setting sun, an American flag draped around her shoulders, searching for a brighter future.

The reverse of the coin is a modern depiction of the heraldic eagle, which first appeared on US coins as early as the 1790s. This modern interpretation was designed by then-US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti in 1986. Mercanti retired from his post in 2010, and it remains vacant to this date.
