Kookaburra birds are a native species found only in Australia and New Guinea. The creatures are terrestrial tree kingfishers, and not typically found near water. Their native habitat ranges from humid forests to arid savannas, and the birds are distinctive for a loud call that mimics the sound of human laughter.

These 2016 Silver Australian Kookaburra coins feature the 26th different depiction of the kookaburra to appear on the coin’s reverse side. In this depiction, a lone kookaburra is shown atop a fence post that is wrapped in barbed wire. Engravings include the series name for the coins, the “P” mint mark of the Perth Mint, and the coin’s year of issue, weight, purity, and metal content.
On the obverse is the right-profile portrait of England’s Queen Elizabeth II. This particular image comes from Sir Ian Rank-Broadley, and was created in 1998 as the fourth-generation image of Her Majesty for commonwealth coins.
