The grizzly bear has dominated the wilderness areas of the United States and Canada for centuries, and continues to strike fear in the hearts of modern mankind despite weapons. The sheer size and power of the bear are unmatched by another mammal on the continent.
Silver Canadian Grizzly Bear coins are the latest in a long line of products from the Royal Canadian Mint honoring the grizzly bear. This particular series includes four unique designs from Lauren Crenshaw. Previous releases included a bear catching a salmon (first), a male and female grizzly (second), and a mother bear with her cubs (third).
On the reverse face of the coin you’ll find the image of two massive male grizzly bears as they fight for dominance and control. Both beasts lunge at one another with their paws up and jaws open, ready to fight to the death if necessary. Engravings on this face include “Canada” and “20 Dollars 2016.”
The obverse bears the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that has featured on all Canadian coinage since 2003. On this side of the coin you’ll find the simple engravings of “Elizabeth II” and “D.G. Regina.”
The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 by the ruling British Empire. Originally using just one location in Ottawa, lack of production capacity eventually led to the opening of a Winnipeg facility in the 1980s.
