Niue Hawksbill Turtle coins started life in 2010 as the Silver Fiji Taku. Produced by the New Zealand Mint for Fiji, the coin was known as the Fiji Taku because the local Fijian language uses “taku” as the name for the hawksbill.

A species of sea turtle, the hawksbill is found throughout the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. In this region of the world, the hawksbill is known to inhabit waters from the Cook Islands to the northern shores of New Zealand, where it transits for mating season and the plentiful food supplies of the warm, shallow coastal waters.

Each 2016 Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle Coin in this product listing earned a Mint State 69 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition are considered near perfect because while they have their full, original mint luster, they also possess a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.

On the reverse you’ll find the image of a hawksbill turtle as it swims through the bubbly waters of the South Pacific. The obverse face of the coin includes the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This particular profile of Her Majesty was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.

The New Zealand Mint is the only facility in New Zealand, is privately owned, and operates in the capital of Auckland. All New Zealand dollars and coinage are produced overseas by the Royal Canadian Mint and Royal Mint.
