Silver Somalian Elephant coins originated with Somalia in 2004 as part of the African Wildlife Series. During the first four years of production, the Bavarian State Mint limited production of the coins to just 5,000 annually. Available in gold and silver, with bullion, proof, and gilded versions struck, the coin is now produced to meet a greater demand.
Each of the 2016 1 oz Silver Somalian Elephant Coins in this Silver.com product listing is a perfect MS70 coin according to the NGC. Mint State 70 coins have their full, original luster, and no detracting flaws. The Early Release designation identifies coins packed and shipped by the Bavarian State Mint to an NGC depository within 30 days of issue.
The reverse side features the coat of arms of Somalia, and has been included on the reverse of all coins in the series since 2004. It is accompanied by the engraving of “Somali Republic,” and the year of issue and face value of the coin.
On the obverse is the latest African Elephant design in the series. In this image, a male elephant stands confidently at the water’s edge, its trunk raised high as it bellows out its call. The water recedes into the background, with the moon (or sun) rising high in the sky behind it.
The Bavarian State Mint is one of the few facilities in Europe authorized to produce the Eurozone’s common euro (€) currency, and is one of the nation’s sovereign mints.
